I get my haircut at New Barber Shop on Damen and it’s the goods. Dita has changed my hair life for the better with a knack for making me look stylish. Such an upgrade from the old days when I’d go to one of those discount chain places. I finally realized: it’s your head, people see your head everyday – it’s worth a little extra money to get it looking right. I found Dita and I’ve never looked back. I usually schedule in the morning, but it was Saturday so I locked in a 4:30pm appointment. They’ve got a sponsorship deal with the fantastic Logan Square brewery Maplewood to stock a mini-fridge with beers. I helped myself to a Pulaski Pils, which might be my favorite Chicago craft beer. I had some time before my turn, which is good because the cans are 16oz. Happy Gilmore was on the TV with no sound. Fortunately I’ve seen it several hundred times(although it’s been awhile since my last viewing) and don’t need the audio to follow along. The old man singing ‘Endless Love’, Shooter McGavin eating pieces of shit for breakfast, Bob Barker fist fight – an early Sandler masterpiece. I finished my beer and hopped in the chair for the haircut experience. A crowd of pre and post-cut clients gathered on the couches enjoying beers and the conversation was lively – the whole shop swapping jokes. Dita never lost focus, however. And by the end of my shampoo and styling, my head was ready to show the world. I was off to Union Station, so I grabbed a Pulaski Pils for the train (with Dita’s blessing) and took my fresh cut out to the streets.
